Pennsylvania DOT engineers assigned a 90-ton design load
to over 600 Monotubes specified on this section of I-95 in the vicinity of the
Philadelphia Airport.
The selection of high-capacity tapered piles was made following experiences with
non-tapered piles on adjoining contracts where overruns and load test failures occurred. |

Cyclic testing to over three times the
design load confirmed the engineers' confidence with the tapered pile selection for the
soil-pile-hammer system.
As a result, overruns and the question of safe foundations were eliminated. |
